Nova Scotia Sails Once More
Solo, non-stop, West around the World
CSM is setting off to challenge for one of the biggest records in offshore sailing; The outright Speed Record for Sailing West Around the World.
Our Open 60 Race Boat
Our Open 60 the ‘Pride of Nova Scotia’ was launched in 2000 and in that year took the outright 24hr speed sailing record. This makes her still the fastest fixed keel, single-handed yacht in the world. Now she needs to be made ready for the Speed Record Attempt, where you can help with by supporting her.

One thing we all know about the sea is that once out there we are at the mercy of the weather whatever it decides to do. With modern weather routing and forecasting we always have a very good idea of what is ahead of us even when we are many thousands of miles from land allowing us to prepare ahead of time whether that might be by altering course, heaving to or simply preparing our equipment accordingly. The right boat
One area where our boats really shine is safety in heavy weather. They are made of Kevlar containing a foam core which means the boats have huge bouyancy reserves even in the unlikely case of flooding. Plus, these boats feature at least 4 watertight compartments able to be pumped independently. Read more ›
The Right Skipper
There is only one group of people who know what lies over the horizon, those who have been there. Spartan Ocean Racing skipper’s have all captained Round the World Race boats before they ever set foot on our vessels. Read more ›

Life on board
Initially, when contemplating sailing in one of our events the focus is understandably on the boat, the weather and the skipper/mate. What ends up often being the highlight of the trip is the amazing experience of being part of crew, part of team participating in either a race or a regatta or an incredible ‘bucket-list’ voyage. In our experience, it is the comradeship and simplicity of life on board that lures people back to the sea time and time again. Read more ›
Sailing in hot weather can be fantastic- light airs, fluffy clouds, easy swells; but if you get it wrong in your packing hot weather can make you just as uncomfortable as cold weather. Whilst not strictly as technical to get right as cold weather preparation- here are some notes to make sure you get it right during your hot weather event. The main problem we have seen over the years when it comes to hot weather is an incorrect choice of materials in the clothing some crew members bring with them. Read more ›

The first day’s training is all about safety. Our goal is to make your event as safe as possible. ‘Safe’ to us has a few meanings. Number one of course we want to keep you safe from bodily harm whilst with us on the boat- this involves revealing all the hazards present on the boat- those that are simple to perceive and those that are somewhat less obvious. This might include such simple things as correctly naivgating your way up and down the companionway and goes… Read more ›
I have had the good fortune to sail with Chris on 2 occasions, one of them being the RORC inaugural Trans Atlantic Race. Would I do it again – Absolutely! Chris is the consummate sailor – optimizing boat speeds but with crew safety the overriding policy. He will give you the confidence to skipper your own boat better, and if you don’t own a boat – the desire to get one!
Chris and the guys from Spartan Racing made my Fastnet trip one that I’ll never forget. The whole experience was great from start to finish.
I’ve done four event’s from day racing in St.Maarten to Atlantic crossing. Every event was absolutely fantastic. Spartan is very well organized, the boats are in excellent condition and sailing with Chris just truly amazing. His skills as a sailor as well as a teacher, the way he runs the boat and organizes the crew are outstanding. and due his experience and condition of the boat it, always feels absolutely safe. hope to be on board many more times.
Helming that sea stallion at 20 kts in the middle of the night, holding my route by aiming for a star, while fluorescent plancton were illuminating the bridge, THAT will be my best sailing memory!
Racing with the competitive “big boy” fleets on premier races is a definite thrill I would not otherwise experience. Shifts sailing in the mid to high teens for hours on end is thrilling and rekindles the love of making boats go fast.
Challenger is an incredible experience for new and experienced sailors. An awesome boat to meet new people and share a grand race or adventure. There is simply nothing better than messing around in boats and Challenger is a really neat boat to mess around in.
Sailing with the Spartan Ocean Racing team and in particular, Chris is an enriching experience. He provides a safe environment, without taking the challenging edge off the sailing, to expand your skill level and is always willing to take the time to explain something more than once. Being on board the Spartan Ocean Racing boat Challenger was a real treat and the atmosphere on board was perfect to enjoy the days away from work.
Chris is the type of guy that you want to have among your friends, generous about his passion, helpful, and with an amazing sense of humour. He is a sailing mentor. Now if he could speak French he would be perfect!
I have sailed on the Great Lakes, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea for my entire life. In this time, I have had the wonderful opportunity to sail with some really great people; sailors who know far more than me. However, the unique experience I gained when sailing with Chris Stanmore-Major in the 2014 Caribbean 600 was something I will never forget. Here I met a man, many years my junior in life, but so far ahead of me in his experience and knowledge of the sea that I was truly blown away. I learned more in a week with CSM than I ever thought possible…
